Our Asian leopard cat Harry offers the Bengal breed world wide and specially the UK breeders brand new genetics for the breed. Harry is completely unrelated to any other leopard cats found in the Bengal breed so far and offers some fantastic qualities. Harry boasts large well defined open rosettes on a super plush coat. His back ground colour is a stunning burn orange golden colour offsetting his rosettes wonderfully. His athletic, slim lined and exotic body shape will offer Bengal breeding programs the chance to pull away from the stocky over sized shapes that have been introduced by the various domestic breeds used to create the earlier styles of Bengal’s. Harry’s leopard cat characteristic bright white tummy offers breeders concentrating on the white tummy gene a chance to integrate earlier generation cats with the much sought after wild looks and as a leopard cat himself Harry, we feel is particularly pretty and special.

Harry has several potential Leopard cat mates arriving home throughout 2009 and 2010, so will also be fathering leopard cat babies also. These special babies will not be for sale and will remain here with us.

The Asian leopard cat is one of the smaller subspecies of the leopard cats. It averages to be around the size of a domestic cat, and is often described as being slightly higher on the legs and longer in the body. The tail is shorter in proportion than a domestic cat’s tail. The leopard cat is usually a shy little cat that feeds on small animals such as reptiles, rodents and birds and is often attracted to live stock near human settlements. The leopard cat matures at around 18 months in the wild, although some state that they can mature from 6 to 24 months of age. In captivity where dietary needs are constantly well met cats are said to mature earlier. The Asian leopard cat is a beautiful cat and is still commonly killed for its coat. There are many subspecies but the subspecies we work with here at poespoes cattery is highly rosetted with breathtaking markings a quality that would help camouflage the little wild cat in its natural habitat.

Leopard cats from Asian do not usually have a defined breeding season, and have between 2 and 4 cubs that are born blind. The cubs mature quickly and by day 25 can eat solid meaty foods regurgitated by their mother. In captivity male leopard cats have been known to help raise cubs but this is far less apparent in the wild. Another difference in the wild is that the male matures more quickly than the female hence the males will travel to find a mate out side of the areas the males were born and raised in, this minimises inbreeding in the wild populations, however in captivity many leopard cats will form bonded pairs and only breed with a single mate in their captive life time. This is also shown when hybridizing the leopard cats as our leopard cat Harry will only mate a select few females that he has bonded with and he likes. In captivity poor housing and diet is the main pit falls of leopard cats. We feed Harry a varied diet of whole prey items as well as added vitamins and supplements. Quail, pheasant, rats, mice, fish, rabbit, are but a few food items we offer Harry regularly to ensure he gets a balanced varied diet. Leopard cats are still controlled under the dangerous wild animal’s licence meaning that anyone wishing to keep a cat such as a leopard cat will need to get a licence and public liabilities insurance and demonstrate a good level of knowledge on the animals they wish to keep. Keeping leopard cats is not for everyone costs a great deal of money if done properly and is very time consuming.

With us here, Harry has a large enclosure filled with natural materials to help him express his natural behaviours, he has a pool, arboreal climbing frame spanning his enclosure, several hides including a heated house, non toxic planting and large rocks to hide amongst. We use a combination of sand and bark chipping (untreated with pesticides) as flooring that can become dirty regularly and need cleaning / changing frequently. Harry is very much not a pet but a life style choice; we wouldn’t be with out our leopard cats but understood the massive undertaking when we decided to share our lives with these wonderful little cats.

Today in modern breeding programmes people are getting incredibly demanding on the quality of cats they introduce and breed from. We are like minded here at PoesPoes however we have been equally selective of our Asian leopard cats. Harry’s face is a delight. A pinched face boasting very larger whisker pads, heavy brow and large nocturnal eyes make up the exotic look of this boys expression. His strong brilliant white chin presents his head followed by his stunning rosetted coat. Harry’s flanks are pure rosettes and each rosette is heavily outlined adding to the breath taking contrast of this boy. Harry will be mated to the modern Bengal’s of today to introduce his genetics, with such a stunning Leopard cat we feel we should do him justice by combining his new genes to some of the most well known Bengal breeding lines from around the world. Only time will tell what this boy will produce.
